Symptoms in early stage (0-3 days):

  • Severe pain in shoulder and upper arm
  • Swelling and bruising
  • Loss of movement in shoulder
  • Numbness or tingling in hand

Symptoms in intermediate stage (3-9 weeks):

  • Pain with movement
  • Some bruising and swelling still present
  • Stiffness in shoulder
  • Loss of strength

Symptoms in advanced stage (9-18+ weeks):

  • Reduced pain levels
  • Improved movement in shoulder
  • Return of some strength
  • Ongoing stiffness

What to do:

  • Seek immediate medical care (A&E/ER)
  • Apply ice to reduce swelling
  • Support arm in a sling
  • Take pain relief as prescribed
  • Gradually increase movement as pain allows
  • Complete prescribed physiotherapy exercises
  • Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activity

When to seek help:

  • Severe pain not relieved by medication
  • Increased swelling or bruising
  • Numbness or tingling that worsens
  • Inability to move shoulder at all
  • Signs of infection (fever, increased redness)
