Common name: Fracture of the head of the radius bone in the forearm

Symptoms in early stage (0-3 days):

  • Pain on the outside of the elbow
  • Swelling around the elbow
  • Difficulty straightening the elbow
  • Loss of grip strength

Symptoms in intermediate stage (3-9 weeks):

  • Pain during rotation of forearm
  • Swelling reducing gradually
  • Stiffness in elbow and wrist
  • Weak grip strength

Symptoms in advanced stage (9-18+ weeks):

  • Pain mostly resolved
  • Near-normal elbow movement
  • Returning grip strength
  • Minimal stiffness

What to do:

  • Seek medical care promptly
  • Apply ice and compression
  • Immobilize elbow initially
  • Take prescribed pain relief
  • Begin gentle exercises as directed
  • Progress to strengthening exercises
  • Avoid heavy gripping activities

When to seek help:

  • Pain not improving with medication
  • Inability to move forearm at all
  • Swelling that increases after 48-72 hours
  • Numbness in hand
  • Signs of infection
