Common name: Fracture of the head of the radius bone in the forearm
Symptoms in early stage (0-3 days):
- Pain on the outside of the elbow
- Swelling around the elbow
- Difficulty straightening the elbow
- Loss of grip strength
Symptoms in intermediate stage (3-9 weeks):
- Pain during rotation of forearm
- Swelling reducing gradually
- Stiffness in elbow and wrist
- Weak grip strength
Symptoms in advanced stage (9-18+ weeks):
- Pain mostly resolved
- Near-normal elbow movement
- Returning grip strength
- Minimal stiffness
What to do:
- Seek medical care promptly
- Apply ice and compression
- Immobilize elbow initially
- Take prescribed pain relief
- Begin gentle exercises as directed
- Progress to strengthening exercises
- Avoid heavy gripping activities
When to seek help:
- Pain not improving with medication
- Inability to move forearm at all
- Swelling that increases after 48-72 hours
- Numbness in hand
- Signs of infection
