Common name: Fracture of the small wrist bone on the thumb side

Symptoms in early stage (0-3 days):

  • Wrist pain, especially on thumb side
  • Swelling in wrist
  • Difficulty gripping or holding objects
  • Tenderness in wrist

Symptoms in intermediate stage (3-12 weeks):

  • Pain with gripping activities
  • Swelling reducing
  • Stiffness in wrist
  • Weakness in thumb

Symptoms in advanced stage (12-16+ weeks):

  • Pain improving significantly
  • Better grip strength
  • Increased wrist mobility
  • Minimal weakness

What to do:

  • Seek medical evaluation
  • Immobilize wrist immediately
  • Apply ice and elevation
  • Take pain relief as needed
  • Wear protective cast/splint as prescribed
  • Begin gentle hand exercises
  • Progress to wrist strengthening

When to seek help:

  • Increasing pain despite immobilization
  • Swelling that worsens
  • Numbness or tingling in hand
  • Inability to grip at all
  • Signs of infection in the wrist area
