Common name: Fracture of the small wrist bone on the thumb side
Symptoms in early stage (0-3 days):
- Wrist pain, especially on thumb side
- Swelling in wrist
- Difficulty gripping or holding objects
- Tenderness in wrist
Symptoms in intermediate stage (3-12 weeks):
- Pain with gripping activities
- Swelling reducing
- Stiffness in wrist
- Weakness in thumb
Symptoms in advanced stage (12-16+ weeks):
- Pain improving significantly
- Better grip strength
- Increased wrist mobility
- Minimal weakness
What to do:
- Seek medical evaluation
- Immobilize wrist immediately
- Apply ice and elevation
- Take pain relief as needed
- Wear protective cast/splint as prescribed
- Begin gentle hand exercises
- Progress to wrist strengthening
When to seek help:
- Increasing pain despite immobilization
- Swelling that worsens
- Numbness or tingling in hand
- Inability to grip at all
- Signs of infection in the wrist area
