Common name: Shin bone fracture

Symptoms in early stage (0-3 days):

  • Severe pain in shin
  • Significant swelling
  • Inability to bear weight
  • Possible bruising along shin

Symptoms in intermediate stage (4-12 weeks):

  • Pain with weight-bearing activity
  • Swelling still present but reducing
  • Difficulty walking normally
  • Weakness in leg

Symptoms in advanced stage (12-20+ weeks):

  • Pain mostly resolved with activity
  • Improved weight-bearing ability
  • Near-normal walking pattern
  • Leg strength improving

What to do:

  • Seek immediate medical care
  • Keep leg elevated
  • Apply ice to reduce swelling
  • Use crutches or walker
  • Follow immobilization protocol
  • Take prescribed pain relief
  • Begin weight-bearing as directed

When to seek help:

  • Severe pain not controlled
  • Swelling that increases significantly
  • Inability to move toes or feel foot
  • Skin changes (pallor, coolness)
  • Signs of infection
