Common name: Shin bone fracture
Symptoms in early stage (0-3 days):
- Severe pain in shin
- Significant swelling
- Inability to bear weight
- Possible bruising along shin
Symptoms in intermediate stage (4-12 weeks):
- Pain with weight-bearing activity
- Swelling still present but reducing
- Difficulty walking normally
- Weakness in leg
Symptoms in advanced stage (12-20+ weeks):
- Pain mostly resolved with activity
- Improved weight-bearing ability
- Near-normal walking pattern
- Leg strength improving
What to do:
- Seek immediate medical care
- Keep leg elevated
- Apply ice to reduce swelling
- Use crutches or walker
- Follow immobilization protocol
- Take prescribed pain relief
- Begin weight-bearing as directed
When to seek help:
- Severe pain not controlled
- Swelling that increases significantly
- Inability to move toes or feel foot
- Skin changes (pallor, coolness)
- Signs of infection
